Ellen Cogen: Bio

Ellen

I began my musical life as a classical musician, beginning piano studies at 5, and cello at 10. I was always drawn to a variety of musical genres and instruments, but something finally "clicked" when I started studying voice while a senior at the University of Massachusetts. My world, musical and otherwise, opened up to me. I went on to earn a Master's Degree in Voice Performance from The New England Conservatory of Music, and now make vocal music, whether performing, teaching, composing, or conducting, my primary focus.

Jazz singing was an inevitable, though not always clear destiny for me. I fell in love with the songs watching old movies as a young girl. The art of improvisation is, to me, irresistable, and the purest essence of musical expression.
